EDGAR D. MITCHELL

EDGAR D. MITCHELL, ScD. – Apollo 14 Astronaut. On January 31, 1971, Dr. Edgar Mitchell, embarked on a journey through outer space of some 500,000 miles that resulted in his becoming the sixth man to walk on the moon.  That historic journey was made in the company of Admiral Alan Shepard and Colonel Stuart Roosa. Dr. Mitchell is the founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, a foundation organized to sponsor research in the nature of consciousness. He is  cofounder of the Association of Space Explorers, an international organization founded in 1984 for all who share the experience of space travel.  Both organizations are educational organizations developed to provide new understanding of the human condition resulting from the epoch of space exploration. Dr. Mitchell's honors and awards include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the USN Distinguished Service Medal, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the NASA Group Achievement Award (three times), and a 2005 nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Only in recent times has the power of perspective and belief to effect behavior change become well documented in human social and political endeavors.  The "Overview Effect" reported by our generation of space farers provides us hope that learning to see ourselves, our small planet, and our actions toward nature and each other from that larger perspective can strongly influence the course of evolution toward a more peaceful and sustainable future.
