Boston, MA, December 6, 2012 — The Overview Institute announced today that the first film known to focus exclusively on the Overview Effect will be released by Planetary Collective on December 7, 2012. The Institute played a major role in the making of the film, which is titled “Overview.” It features several members of the Overview Group, including Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14 astronaut and member of the Overview Group), Frank White (author of The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution and cofounder of the Institute), and David Beaver (cofounder of the Institute).
“Since the publication of The Overview Effect in 1987, I have been supporting efforts to convey the Overview Effect message in a variety of media,” said Frank White. “We consider ‘Overview’ to be an excellent use of the film medium to tell this important story. We also expect that more films will be made to transmit this message, by members of our Group and others.”
David Beaver noted, “As we prepare for hundreds, and even thousands, of ‘new astronauts’ to fly into Low Earth Orbit as part of the NewSpace movement, this film will play an important role in communicating the worldview-shifting message of the Overview Effect.”
The film will have its premiere at Harvard University on December 7 under the auspices of the Harvard Extension School (where Frank White is an instructor). The Harvard Graduate School of Education is hosting the event, and the Harvard Alumni Association and Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School are also supporting the event in a variety of ways.
The event will be introduced by Robert Neugeboren, Dean of Students and Alumni Affairs for Continuing Education at Harvard. Participants will include Planetary Collective filmmaker Guy Reid, Frank White, NASA astronaut and founder of “Fragile Oasis” Ron Garan, former NASA astronaut Jeff Hoffman (who was interviewed for the first edition of The Overview Effect), and filmmaker Douglas Trumbull (a member of the Overview Group). David Beaver will also attend on behalf of the Overview Institute.
The event will take place from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
